April's E-Waste Stats!
April was a busy month for e-waste recycling at Junk That Funk. Discover our stats and insights on the e-waste collected from our community events!
Understanding E-Waste in April
April has been a significant month for Junk That Funk, as we witnessed an impressive influx of electronic waste, commonly known as e-waste. This month, we hosted four successful e-waste recycling events, collecting nearly 60,000 lbs of e-waste from over 1,000 drop-offs. It’s evident that more people are becoming aware of the importance of recycling electronic devices, which is crucial for both environmental sustainability and responsible waste management.
What We Found: CRTs vs. Modern TVs
One of the interesting trends we observed this April was the presence of older CRT (cathode-ray tube) televisions. Surprisingly, many of these models were still in working condition. However, when compared to today’s sleek and lightweight flat-screen televisions, CRTs simply don’t make the cut. They occupy more space and are often less efficient. Moreover, while some of these older models are more costly to repair than to replace, we also noticed a surprising number of flat-screen TVs being dropped off for recycling that were less than two years old.
The Shift in Consumer Electronics
This shift from CRTs to flat screens highlights a larger trend in consumer electronics: the rapid turnover rate of devices. Many consumers are opting for newer models, often discarding perfectly functional devices in the process. This trend raises questions about consumer behavior and the need for responsible recycling practices.

Community Engagement and the Importance of Recycling
Community engagement is at the heart of our mission. By hosting these free e-waste recycling events, we aim to educate the public about the environmental impacts of e-waste. Many people are unaware that improperly disposing of electronics can lead to harmful substances leaching into the environment. According to the EPA, recycling e-waste conserves natural resources, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and helps create jobs in the recycling industry.
How You Can Help
We encourage Ottawa residents and businesses to take part in this initiative. Whether you have old computers, televisions, or other electronic devices, it’s important to recycle them properly.
