Do the ‘Ol-Cah Pol-Cah’ and Turn Your Business Around with Junk That Funk

On July 15th, 2015, Junk That Funk proudly joined a groundbreaking initiative led by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC). Our participation was in response to an international call for involvement in a pilot project aimed at testing new environmental performance evaluation guidelines.

Understanding the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative

The UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative is a collaborative effort designed to promote the use of life cycle thinking in decision-making processes. This initiative is particularly focused on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as they are integral to achieving sustainable development goals. The program encourages businesses to adopt practices that minimize their environmental impact and maximize resource efficiency.

The Call for Participation

In 2015, the UNEP/SETAC issued a call for participation aimed at SMEs to test their Organizational Life Cycle Assessment Guidance Document. Junk That Funk responded enthusiastically, eager to represent Canadian small businesses in this essential effort to establish best practices in environmental performance evaluation.

Junk That Funk’s Commitment to Sustainability

At Junk That Funk, we have consistently prioritized sustainable practices in our junk removal services. Our approach includes a commitment to diverting materials from landfills through reuse and recycling. However, through our involvement in the UNEP/SETAC initiative, we have come to understand that not all recycling options are created equal. Therefore, we continually seek out the most environmentally responsible methods available.

Quote from Our Founder

“We are a locally owned Ottawa business with a reputation for running an efficient junk removal service. We already prefer to divert what we collect to reuse and recycle options, but now we see that not all options are created with equal environmental risk. So how do we run the service we provide in-line with the UNEP/SETAC’s guidance?” – Cory Desormeaux, Junk That Funk

How Junk That Funk Aligns with UNEP/SETAC Guidelines

Participating in this international project has enabled us to enhance our operational practices significantly. We engage in a thorough analysis of our processes and make necessary adjustments to align with the UNEP/SETAC guidelines. This involves:

Community Involvement and E-Waste Recycling

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we also host free community e-waste recycling events. These events provide an opportunity for residents to responsibly dispose of electronic waste while learning about the importance of recycling and sustainability. Since our inception, we have helped hundreds of Ottawa residents and businesses reduce their environmental footprint.
