Understanding System Boundaries with Junk That Funk and UNEP/SETAC

What does a small junk removal company in Ottawa have in common with the Mexican central bank? The answer lies in their commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. At Junk That Funk, we've been working closely with the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative to enhance our understanding of environmental impacts through the lens of life cycle assessment (LCA).

Setting the Right System Boundaries

As we progress in our journey to implement the ol-cah pol-cah approach at Junk That Funk, our discussions with the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative have primarily focused on the initial draft of our Goal and Scope document. This document is crucial as it establishes the parameters of our study, particularly concerning the definition of system boundaries.

Why System Boundaries Matter

The concept of system boundaries is central to any life cycle assessment. It involves deciding which energy and material processing activities to include in our study. By defining these boundaries, we can accurately assess the environmental impacts of our junk removal services in Ottawa.

Feedback and Improvements

One of the most significant pieces of feedback we've received pertains to our definition of system boundaries. We were advised to review the UNEP guidance document examples provided in section 3.3.1, which outlines the activities involved in life cycle assessments. Below, we detail the changes made to our system boundaries based on this feedback.

Before and After: Our System Boundary Diagrams

Our initial diagram was a simplified representation of our processes:

Before:

After reviewing section 3.3.1, we made significant improvements to our diagram:

After:

As illustrated, our updated system boundary diagram now incorporates more details and classifies transportation of materials as a critical activity within our processing facility.

Creating a Comprehensive Survey

To guide our changes effectively, we developed a survey for each of our facilities based on the predefined activities listed in section 3.3.1 of the UNEP guidance document. This survey helped us identify essential activities that we previously overlooked.

For instance, it became evident during the survey process that we should include our truck and trailer operations as part of the “Transportation of materials, intermediate products, products and waste in vehicles owned or controlled by...” Junk That Funk.

Community Engagement and E-Waste Recycling

In addition to enhancing our junk removal services, Junk That Funk is committed to environmental responsibility through community engagement. We host free community e-waste recycling events, providing Ottawa residents a safe and responsible way to dispose of electronic waste.

These events not only help reduce landfill waste but also raise awareness about the importance of recycling and proper waste management.
